Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To

The code card for MT5+ shows a 10-digit magnetic code; Interactive+ shows an 8-digit mechanical code. If you have neither, we can decode the lock cylinder on-site.

Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Car Key Cutting Is Failing

• The key sticks or requires jiggling in the cylinder. Mul-T-Lock’s telescopic pins ride on precision-milled grooves. After 8-12 years of Ohio’s road salt and summer humidity, those grooves corrode microscopically. The key still looks fine, but the pin stacks no longer glide. We see this most on vehicles parked outside in Cleveland winters or Columbus apartment lots.
• Remote buttons work intermittently or not at all, but the key still turns. The transponder coil and remote PCB are housed in the key head, sealed with ultrasonic welding. Drop it enough times, or let it sit in a cup holder through a 95-degree Ohio afternoon, and the solder joints crack. The mechanical cut still works; the electronics don’t.
• “Key not recognized” warning on the dash, especially on first turn. The MT5+ alpha spring generates a magnetic field pattern the ignition coil reads. If the spring fatigues - common after 100,000+ insertions - the signal weakens. Here’s where DIY goes wrong: cutting a Mul-T-Lock key requires a specialized dimple mill with angle indexing - standard key duplicators at hardware stores can’t read the lateral groove angles.
